Choosing the Right Electric Mountain Bike for Canadian Riding
Electric mountain bikes — eMTBs — have transformed trail riding in Canada. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor that powers our Bulls, Cannondale, and Cube models delivers up to 85 Nm of torque, enough to turn a punishing fire-road grind into an accessible adventure without removing the skill and reward of the descent. Whether you're a seasoned trail rider looking to extend your range or a newer rider building confidence on technical terrain, an eMTB opens up rides that simply weren't possible before.
Hardtail vs. Full Suspension eMTB
Hardtail eMTB
Front suspension only. Lighter, more efficient, lower cost. Best for cross-country, gravel trails, and riders who spend most of their time on smoother singletrack or fire roads. The Aventon Ramblas and Velotric Summit 1 are strong hardtail options at accessible price points.
Full Suspension eMTB
Front and rear suspension. Absorbs more trail chatter, more control on technical descents and rooted terrain. Higher price but a significantly more capable off-road machine. Our Bulls Copperhead Evo and Cannondale Moterra Neo Carbon sit at the top of this category.
eMTB Brands We Carry
We stock electric mountain bikes from brands with proven trail performance, all backed by Canadian warranty support: Aventon, Bulls, Cannondale, Cube, Velotric, and NCM. All Bosch-equipped models use the current Smart System platform, which includes automatic firmware updates, Bluetooth connectivity to the Bosch eBike Flow app, and compatibility with the Kiox 300 and Nyon displays.
Ontario & Alberta Trail Access: What You Need to Know
In Ontario, electric bikes are classified under provincial law as power-assisted bicycles (PABs) when they meet the 500W motor and 32 km/h speed cap criteria. Most eMTBs in this collection qualify, which means they are permitted on public roads and multi-use paths — but individual trail systems (Hardwood Ski & Bike, Albion Hills, Caledon Trailway) set their own eMTB access policies. Alberta has similar provincial rules, with Calgary-area trail systems increasingly welcoming Class 1 eMTBs on designated trails. We recommend checking the specific trail system's current policy before your first ride.
Popular Trails Near Our Showrooms
- Hardwood Ski & Bike — Barrie, ON (eMTB-friendly, intermediate–expert flow trails)
- Albion Hills Conservation Area — Caledon, ON (beginner–intermediate, marked trails)
- Glen Major & Walker Woods — Durham Region, ON (technical, extended trail network)
- Nose Hill Park — Calgary, AB (multi-use, accessible year-round)
- Canmore Nordic Centre — Canmore, AB (summer trail access, lift-served descents nearby)
Test Ride Before You Buy
We encourage every customer to test ride before purchasing. Our Toronto showrooms (Downtown at 533 Richmond St W and Midtown at 87 Wingold Ave Unit 4) and our Calgary location (506 42 Ave SE) carry a rotating demo fleet of eMTBs. Frequently Asked Questions — Electric Mountain Bikes At Amego
Are electric mountain bikes legal to ride on trails in Ontario and Alberta?
Provincial law in both Ontario and Alberta classifies most eMTBs as power-assisted bicycles (PABs), which are legal on public roads and multi-use paths without requiring a licence or registration. However, individual trail systems make their own rules. Many Ontario trail networks — including Hardwood Ski & Bike and some MBTA (Mountain Bike Tourism Association) trails — explicitly permit Class 1 eMTBs (pedal-assist only, no throttle, up to 32 km/h). Calgary and Canmore trails are increasingly eMTB-friendly. Always check the specific trail operator's current policy before riding. Our team is happy to advise on trail-legal models — call us at 416-907-4922.
What is the difference between a mid-drive and hub-drive motor on an eMTB?
Mid-drive motors — like the Bosch Performance Line CX used on our Bulls, Cannondale, and Cube models — are mounted at the bike's bottom bracket and drive power through the chain and gears. This gives you better weight distribution, more natural climbing feel, and the ability to leverage your gears to multiply motor torque on steep terrain. Hub-drive motors sit inside the rear wheel hub and deliver power directly — simpler mechanically, lower cost, and still very capable. The NCM Moscow Plus is a solid example of a capable hub-drive eMTB at an accessible price point. For sustained climbs and technical terrain, mid-drive is the recommended choice.
How far can I ride on a single charge, and can I extend the range?
Range depends on battery capacity, terrain, rider weight, temperature, and which assist mode you're using. On Eco mode, a 750 Wh Bosch battery — standard on our Bulls and Cannondale models — can deliver 80–130 km on moderate trails. On Trail or Turbo mode on steep terrain, expect 40–60 km. Most Bosch Smart System bikes support the PowerMore 250 range extender, which clips to the downtube and adds up to 250 Wh, effectively doubling your range for longer backcountry rides. The Bosch eBike Flow app provides real-time range estimates based on your current ride profile.
Should I buy a hardtail or full suspension eMTB?
Hardtail eMTBs have front suspension only and are lighter, more efficient, and generally more affordable. They're ideal if you ride mostly cross-country trails, gravel paths, and smooth singletrack - or if you're newer to mountain biking and prioritizing value.
Full suspension eMTBs add rear suspension, which dramatically improves comfort and control on rooted, rocky, or technical terrain. If you're tackling Ontario Shield rock, Kananaskis backcountry, or anything with serious elevation and descents, full suspension is worth the investment. Still not sure which suits you? Book a test ride at our Toronto or Calgary showroom and we'll have you demo both.
Does Amego offer service and repairs for electric mountain bikes after purchase?
