A cargo e-bike is an electric bicycle built with an extended frame, reinforced rack, and higher payload capacity to carry children, pets, groceries, or gear. Cargo e-bikes typically fall into two styles: longtail, with an extended rear rack, and front-loader, with a cargo box ahead of the rider.
How much weight can a cargo e-bike carry?
Most cargo e-bikes in our collection carry a total payload of 180 to 200 kg depending on the model. Tern's GSD and HSD longtails are rated for some of the highest capacities in the category, while the Cube's Cargo Sport front loading cargo box is built for hauling kids and larger loads at lower speeds.
Are cargo e-bikes legal in Ontario and Alberta?
Yes. Cargo e-bikes sold at Amego EV qualify as power-assisted bicycles under Ontario and Alberta regulations, with motor assistance limited to 500W and 32 km/h. They're legal on roads, bike lanes, and multi-use paths. Riders must be 16 or older, with no license or insurance required.
What's the difference between a longtail and a front-loader cargo e-bike?
Longtail cargo e-bikes, like the Tern GSD, HSD, and Quick Haul, extend the rear rack to carry one or two child seats or panniers and handle like a standard bike. Front-loader models, like the Cube Cargo Sport, carry cargo or kids in a box ahead of the rider for better visibility and a lower center of gravity at slow speeds.
